Research methodology
From discovery to publication
- Discover. Searches by destination, degree level and delivery, in English and local languages; institutional catalogs; national education registers; accreditation and validation directories. Rankings, Wikipedia and third-party directories are used for discovery only and never verify a fact. A search engine may omit programs, so a missing result is never read as a closure and a quiet search is never read as completeness.
- Check the program is current. We look for active admissions, current curriculum and delivery, a current tuition year, and any renaming, suspension or replacement. Archived PDFs can support history but not current availability.
- Record facts with sources. Every non-empty fact stores the official page and a short verbatim quote. A script re-fetches the page and looks for the quote; a fact whose quote cannot be found is withheld or downgraded. Pages that block automated readers are skipped and listed, never bypassed.
- Keep levels apart. Institution, campus and program are separate records. Accreditation, language, fees and duration belong to the program and campus.
- Review and date. Each record shows when it was last checked. Stale records are flagged for re-checking.
What counts as a veterinary program
Formal programs with an explicit veterinary focus, from certificates to research doctorates: veterinary medicine (DVM, VMD, BVSc, BVMS, BVM&S, BVetMed and local equivalents), veterinary nursing and technology, veterinary assistant training, veterinary science and research degrees (biomedical sciences, public health, epidemiology, pathology, microbiology, pharmacology, parasitology, clinical sciences, preventive medicine, One Health and animal health with a substantive veterinary focus) and formal postgraduate awards. General animal science, zoology, equine studies, wildlife management and pet-care courses are outside the core directory. Pre-veterinary coursework is an advising route or undergraduate preparation, not a professional veterinary degree, and is labelled and excluded from default results. Clinical internships, residencies, continuing professional development and specialist certification are not academic degrees and are never counted as such. Certificates and diplomas are kept out of degree counts.
Study pathway classification
We separate veterinary medicine (the qualification toward becoming a veterinarian), veterinary nursing, veterinary technology, veterinary science and research and veterinary assistant training. A pathway is shown only when a statement on an official page supports it, with the quote beside it and the jurisdiction it applies to; otherwise the program is shown as not classified. The award title never decides it: “Doctor of Veterinary Medicine”, “Bachelor of Veterinary Science” and “BVSc” are not automatically entry-to-practice, a PhD is research and not a professional qualification, and “technician”, “technologist” and “nurse” mean different jobs in different countries. Level, professional purpose, entry route, prior education, duration and country-specific recognition are recorded as separate facts.
Recognition, accreditation and evaluation
We separate institutional recognition, degree-awarding authority, program accreditation, program evaluation status, professional-body recognition, eligibility toward registration, directory listings and memberships. Each record names the authority, the exact program and campus, the standing (full, candidate or provisional, conditional), the dates and the source. Provisional status is never shown as full accreditation, and accreditation of a veterinary medicine program is never assumed to cover the institution’s nursing, technology, assistant or online programs. Bodies such as the AVMA Council on Education, the AVMA Committee on Veterinary Technician Education and Activities, the RCVS, the AVBC and EAEVE/ESEVT have different roles; we check each body’s actual role and do not treat their listings as interchangeable. Records are marked verified only when the authority’s own listing or document was read, and recognition in one country is never presented as registration in another.
Tuition and costs
The original currency is authoritative. We do not convert currencies, rank by price, or compare annual tuition with whole-program tuition. Each price keeps its year, billing basis and the student category the page names; nationality alone does not decide which fee applies. Application fees, clinical and laboratory charges, equipment and protective clothing, mandatory travel, placement-related expenses, insurance and other compulsory charges are recorded separately where published. A program total is shown only when a source states it or when annual tuition and a single published duration support a clearly labelled calculation.
Online and hybrid
We verify whether “online” means the complete degree, selected modules, a temporary arrangement, a non-degree course, a hybrid program or an advanced pathway that needs an existing qualification. Mandatory campus attendance, laboratory work, attendance-based exams, local clinical placements (and who arranges them), veterinary workplace requirements and live-attendance requirements are recorded separately from professional pathway status. There is no fully online entry-to-practice veterinary medicine pathway on this site. An institution’s location is not treated as proof of where it enrols online students.
Editorial selections
The best-school pages are unranked editorial selections, not league tables. Each states what was considered, its criteria (verified qualification and pathway, recognition records, clinical training and facilities, tuition and admissions transparency, student support, research opportunities, documented outcomes where comparable), its sources, its limitations and its review date. Veterinarian, nursing, technology and assistant programs are never compared in one unexplained ranking. We do not claim to have visited campuses, tested courses or surveyed employers. A university-wide ranking is never presented as a ranking of its veterinary program, and external rankings are cited only by publisher, subject and edition. Sponsorship has no influence on selection.
What we do not do
- We do not invent institutions, programs, accreditation, facilities, partnerships, faculty biographies, tuition, scholarships, outcomes, rankings or reviews.
- We do not imply that any degree grants permission to practise, a visa, a job or admission.
- We do not copy third-party directories or ranking tables, or use imagery we are not licensed to use. Linking to an official page does not authorise copying its contents.
Corrections and updates
Fees, deadlines and programs change. Past dates are shown as past and never rolled forward. See report a correction and the sponsorship disclosure. Coverage and open gaps by destination are on the destinations page.
